When you are having an anxiety attack its very common to feel a number of sensations all over your body.

  • Tightening of the chest
  • Chest pain
  • Pain in the legs
  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Nausea
  • Trembling
  • Claustrophobia
    • I know, the mind is a powerful thing. I’ve had episodes where I thought I was having a heart attack. It felt like my heart was about to jump out of my chest. Scary stuff. At the end of the day guess what, I didn’t die, I did not pass out, I did not have a heart attack. It passed. Its a beautiful thing AFTER it passes, but during… Well, its hell.

You have had an attack before so you know they do end. So to help calm yourself down, make sure you tell yourself that it will be over shortly. “I will be fine”.

The main cause of the “weird” feelings you get while having an attack is too much oxygen. When you start to panic your heart rate picks up, you begin to breathe shallow and your body goes into the “fight or flight” mode.

Fight or Flight was first described by Walter Bradford Cannon. His theory states that animals react to threats with a general discharge of the sympathetic nervous system, priming the animal for fighting or fleeing. This response was later recognized as the first stage of a general adaptation syndrome that regulates stress responses among vertebrates and other organisms.

Thats when claustrophobia may set in. You just want to get out of the car or just get off the road. Believe me , you are not alone when it comes to these feelings. I really think twice before I complain about how another person is driving now because you never know what they are going through.

I must stress this: The fear of driving can lead to other anxiety conditions if not controlled. You could become afraid of social settings, large area, stores, movies or even leaving the house. This is why it is important to make a serious effort to curb and improve your outlook on life and how you live it. If you continue to be afraid, your circle will become smaller and smaller. We do not want that so… Lets get busy.
